The Miller Group appoints Sir Brain Stewart as new Chairman

The Miller Group, the UK’s largest, privately owned Housebuilding, Property Development and Construction business, today announced the appointment of Sir Brian Stewart as a Non-Executive Director with effect from 3 November 2008.  It is intended that Sir Brian will succeed Bob Speirs, who retires at the end of December, as the Group’s Chairman on 1 January 2009.

Sir Brian, 63, is the former Chairman of international brewing group, Scottish & Newcastle, and a former Chairman of life and pensions group, Standard Life.

At Scottish & Newcastle, Sir Brian helped steer the company from regional brewer and pub operator into an international brewing giant. When Britain’s biggest brewer was taken over by a Carlsberg/Heineken consortium in April 2008 - in one of the biggest acquisition deals in world brewing history - S&N was one of the world’s top five brewers.

During his four years as Chairman at Standard Life, Sir Brian oversaw the company’s transformation from a mutual insurer into a listed FTSE 100 company.

Mr Miller also thanked Mr Speirs for his contribution to The Miller Group over the past nine years.

Sir Brian Stewart was born in 1945 and was educated at Perth Academy and Edinburgh University. He is a qualified chartered accountant.

Scottish & Newcastle – Sir Brian joined Scottish & Newcastle in 1976. In 1988 he became the group’s Finance Director and was appointed to the board. In 1991 he became S&N’s Chief Executive, followed in February 1997 with his appointment as Deputy Chairman and then Executive Chairman in July 2000. His chairmanship at S&N was made non-executive in July 2003. He remained in that post until S&N was bought by Carlsberg/Heineken in April 2008.

Standard Life – Sir Brian was appointed as a Non-Executive Director at Standard Life in April 1993, becoming the group’s Chairman on 1st July, 2003 and serving in the post until stepping down in May 2007.

General - In 2002, Sir Brian was knighted for his contribution to industry. In 2006, he was awarded the “IoD Scotland Chairman’s Award” by the Institute of Directors (Scotland) in recognition of his lifelong contribution to the profession of directorship.

Bob Speirs (72) -  joined The Miller Group in July 1999 and became Chairman in October that year. He was the first non-Miller family member to hold the role since the company was founded in 1934. He is currently the Non-Executive Chairman at transport group Stagecoach, having first been appointed to the board at the Perth-headquartered company in 1995.

Mr Speirs also holds a non-executive directorship with Securysis.

Previously he was a Group Finance Director at the Royal Bank of Scotland.
