Polish safety inspector in safe hands at Miller site

Workers building a £28 million new school in Leamington Spa showed they were in safe hands when they were visited by a Polish safety inspector.

North Leamington School, which is being built by Miller Construction on behalf of Warwickshire County Council, was being held up as being an example of best practice for the way health and safety guidelines are implemented on site.

During the visit, Miller Construction’s senior project manager, Simon Courtney, pointed out some of the safety precautions the company takes to Piotr Kotlinski, from Poland’s National Labour Inspectorate, and his English counterpart, Karl Raw, a construction inspector for the Health and Safety Executive.

Karl said: “I’ve been to North Leamington School a number of times before and was keen to show Piotr the good standards which can be achieved by adhering to quite simple rules on site.”

Simon added: “Piotr took a keen interest in the way we implement health and safety guidelines on site, and was particularly interested in the way we manage to keep workers walking around the site on foot separated from heavy vehicles and plant being transported around by road.”

The visit, part of a two-week fact-finding mission by the Polish National Labour Inspectorate to England, was designed to show Piotr a working example of best practice being implemented on a live site.

Following the site visit to North Leamington, Piotr was due to spend a week looking at how health and systems and procedures were implemented off-site.
