Green roof at Union Square given a helping hand by Beechgrove Garden expert
27.05.09 Company: Miller Construction
Miller Construction was delighted to welcome Carole Baxter, the BBC’s Beechgrove Garden expert, to Union Square in Aberdeen recently to oversee the planting of the green roof.
Union Square, Hammerson’s £250 million mixed-use development, will benefit from 750sqm of ‘green roof’ which will assist with natural drainage and insulation in addition to providing a mini haven for wildlife.
Carole said: “It’s a pleasure for me to attend the planting of the roof at Union Square. I am always encouraged to see developments embrace environmental aspects into their designs and the green roof will be a flurry of local flora and fauna once it is established. This is the first time that I have been able to see a green roof up close on such a large development and I do hope that the example being set will become standard practice.”
Richard Gallacher, Area Director, Miller Construction said: “We were delighted to welcome Carole on site today and she has been giving us some useful tips to ensure the green roof prospers.
”The incorporation of the green roof will deliver many benefits for Union Square, this type of covering can extend the life expectancy of roofing as it protects the waterproofing from climatic extremes and UV exposure. In addition, green roofs are instrumental in reducing carbon emissions and in particular will help to regulate the temperature within the centre.”
Penny Godfrey, Marketing Manager, Union Square, added: “The biodiverse green roof is made up of local Aberdeenshire coastal grasses and wildflowers in order that it will thrive in the local climate. The green roof complements the other innovative environmental elements which benefit Union Square, including solar panels; natural ventilation and wind catchers. “
