Staff support

In the most recent Staff Survey, the five terms chosen as best describing the Company were:
Successful
Safety-conscious
Quality-conscious
Progressive and Friendly.

The Miller Group's strength is derived from its people and we continuously strive to be an employer-of-choice, measuring ourselves against employment standards from both inside and outside of our own sectors. To achieve this, we:

  • monitor the values placed on our overall employment structure via staff surveys and feedback mechanisms such as Staff Committees and Briefing Group, and encourage an open style of two-way communication across the organisation. This is all geared to a no-blame and development-oriented culture.
  • continue to maintain 'investors in People' recognition in all areas of the business, with the process being proudly owned by the divisions and vigorously monitored and promoted at local level.
  • maintain a significant commitment to the recruitment of and development of apprentices and school-leavers and currently employ 60 Craft and 20 Professional Apprentices across the Group.
  • have a structured 2-year Graduate Development Programme which allows graduates to examine a range of 'improver' topics and present their findings to divisional and Group Directors. The Programme is fully-supported by a structure of line management, sponsors, mentors and 'buddies' from earlier graduate intakes.
  • actively support all of our staff with their personal and professional development and we have seen large increases in staff obtain CIOB (Chartered Institute of Builders) qualification in Site or Production Management, with further staff being supported on Tertiary Education programmes.

With the assistance of ACAS, we have provided formal Equal Opportunity training to all levels of staff. We encourage and promote face-to-face communication processes which include business heads conducting 'road-show' presentations on performance and strategy, and make very positive use of our well-honed intranet facilities.

Our support for our people is underpinned by a need for professionalism and integrity, themes well articulated in our Miller Value Statements and in our Ethics and Whistle-blowing Policies.
