Miller wins 'Award to Industry' from Leicester College

16.06.09  Company:  Miller Construction

Miller Construction has been recognised for its work in Leicester by Leicester College at its recent ‘Awards to Industry’ business breakfast.

The annual awards have been established to recognise companies who make a contribution to the College through industry links.  During the first wave of the Leicester BSF schools programme, Miller Construction arranged for 28 learners from the College to have a one week work experience on one of the four school sites which all participated in the initiative.

Leicester College Principal, Maggie Galliers, said:  “The Awards to Industry is an event where we can properly thank our business partners for all they do to ensure that, not only their company prospers, but also that in these difficult times, the future economic health of this area and indeed the country is improved through training and skills development.

“We are privileged at Leicester College to have so many employers working actively with us to address the challenges which Recession is posing.  As businesses need to be even more ‘leading edge’, flexible and innovative to survive we are extremely conscious of the role we can play in supporting them to survive and thrive.  Together, working in partnership, you and we have a huge contribution to make in skills development as one weapon in the armoury of UK competitiveness.”

Through the College’s construction department, Miller Construction ensured that learners were teamed up with qualified trades’ people to ensure their health and safety whilst on site. The students were studying; mechanical and electrical engineering; plumbing; painting and decorating and carpentry.

Andrew McGarva, Operations Director, Miller Construction, said: “We are delighted to have been able to offer these students further vocational experience in a live environment to enhance what they have already learnt. We are committed to the communities where we work.  Being in a position to be able to offer real site experience to these students on projects which will make an immense difference to the Leicester community gives both us and them an enormous sense of pride.”

Miller Construction intends to strengthen its relationship with the college through the second wave of the BSF project and it is anticipated that more learners will be able to benefit from the work experience programme which has been established.

Works at Beaumont Lays, Soar Valley and Judgemeadow are now complete as is the new extension to Fullhurst Community College where the refurbishment works are due to complete later this summer.
