MILLER CONSTRUCTION RECEIVE CERTIFICATE OF MERIT FOR HELICAL STAIR
16.07.10 Company: Miller Construction

Miller Construction (UK) Ltd was delighted to receive a certificate of merit at the 2010 Structural Steel Design Awards for its work on the ‘Helical Stair’ at 500 Brook Drive, Reading.
The awards were established in 1969 to recognise the high standards of structural and architectural design attainable in the use of steel and its potential in terms of efficiency, cost effectiveness, aesthetics and innovation.
The Helical stair follows the principal of creating a functional stair for escape purposes in an innovative aesthetic form. The judges commented: “The dynamic sculptural form of the escape stairs provides a dramatic external feature to the building. The ribbon like central stringer is formed from a hand cut and finished CHS (circular hollow section). Designer and Steelworker have worked closely to achieve delicacy of the steel elements, and the outstanding results demonstrate craftsmanship of the highest order.”
Marcus Hudson, Operations Director, Miller Construction, said: “We are delighted to have received this accolade. The stair itself is a striking feature of the building while acting as a practical fire escape. 500 Brook Drive was also recently awarded the Best Commercial Workplace at the British Council of Offices Regional Awards; this new award further enforces the quality of the project and the high standards achieved by Miller Construction.”
The £24m design and build 500 Brook Drive was built for PRUPIM at Green Park in Reading and was completed in summer 2009.
