Two Miller Construction projects honoured at 2009 Hadrian Awards
10.12.09 Company: Miller Construction
Two projects undertaken by Miller Construction in the North East were honoured with awards at the ‘Hadrian Awards 2009’, Cardinal Hume Catholic School and Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MiMA).
Held every two years, the awards celebrate the best in architecture and the design of the built environment in the North East and Cumbria and projects have to have been in use for at least a year – to provide evidence of their effectiveness and feedback from their users.
Fifty buildings were entered and only six, two of which were built by Miller, received awards.
Tom de la Motte, Joint Managing Director, Miller Construction (UK) Ltd, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that Cardinal Hume Catholic School and MiMA have been recognised by the Hadrian Awards. The event attracts quality buildings from across the region and to have been involved in two of the final six award winning projects is testament to the quality of the work that we produce.”
The Hadrian Awards are organised by the Royal Institute of British Architects North East, Northern Architecture, the North of England Civic Trust and the Landscape Institute North East Branch.
Director of Northern Architecture, Carol Botten said: “The Hadrian Awards celebrate architecture and design but it goes beyond the aesthetic value of a building.
“So that we can assess factors such as how well the brief has been met and if the structure complements its environment, schemes must have been in full use for a year.
“Spaces should be functional and fit for purpose so we also like to assess how users of the buildings feel about them.”
